About the Project

It all began with a simple vision

Every child in Assam deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader. In 2022, Komal Goenka, Founder of Phonic World, together with Ramesh Jain embarked on a mission to give every child in Assam a structured path to reading.

The journey

From six schools to a literacy movement

The journey began with a pilot in six government schools in Guwahati.

The challenge we met

During visits to government primary schools, we met enthusiastic children eager to learn and dedicated teachers committed to making a difference. Yet one challenge stood out — many young learners struggled to read English because they lacked a structured approach to learning how to read.

An opportunity to act

Rather than seeing this as a barrier, we saw it as an opportunity. The journey began with a pilot in six government schools in Guwahati.

A statewide movement

What started as a small pilot soon evolved into a statewide literacy movement. Today, the Phonics Assam initiative has expanded to 2,200 government schools across 11 districts, impacting the lives of more than 100,000 children through teacher capacity building and classroom implementation.

In the classroom

Songs, stories, actions, and phonics

As classrooms came alive with songs, stories, actions, and phonics, children who had once hesitated to read began blending sounds, decoding words, and reading with growing confidence. Teachers witnessed the transformation firsthand, and the momentum began to build.
