A shared belief that every child can become a confident reader
In 2022, Komal Goenka, Founder of Phonic World, together with Ramesh Jain embarked on a mission with one shared belief:
“Every child in Assam deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader.”
During visits to government primary schools, we met enthusiastic children eager to learn and dedicated teachers committed to making a difference. Yet one challenge stood out — many young learners struggled to read English because they lacked a structured approach to learning how to read.
Rather than seeing this as a barrier, we saw it as an opportunity. The journey began with a pilot in six government schools in Guwahati.

As classrooms came alive with songs, stories, actions, and phonics, children who had once hesitated to read began blending sounds, decoding words, and reading with growing confidence. Teachers witnessed the transformation firsthand, and the momentum began to build.
The movement
What started as a small pilot soon evolved into a statewide literacy movement.
Today, the Phonics Assam initiative has expanded to 2,200 government schools across 11 districts, impacting the lives of more than 100,000 children through teacher capacity building and classroom implementation. Every school that joins the mission brings us one step closer to our vision of ensuring that every child in Assam develops strong reading skills during the foundational years.
